T h e A w a r d

The Ripper, the European Crime Fiction Star Award honours a female or male crime fiction author who has rendered outstanding services to crime literature within Europe. The prize will be awarded to a living contemporary author whose work testifies responsibility for crime literature in a special way and stands for a lively and modern development of the genre. His/her work is of European importance and/or has received a significant reception within Europe. The author’s oeuvre or a single outstanding work may be decisive for the awarding. The prize will be awarded once every two years in the course of Europe’s biggest international crime story festival Mord am Hellweg – Tatort Ruhr. The award is endowed with 11.111 Euro and will be awarded for the first time in autumn 2008.

C o n d i t i o n s | P r o c e d u r e s | D a t e s

- European publishing companies, literary institutions, editors, agencies, crime fiction authors, crime fiction journalists and literary agents are allowed to propose a female or male candidate for the award up to the qualifying date. It is not possible to propose oneself as a candidate. The qualifying date is March 31st, 2008.
- When proposing a candidate a short explanation must be included which refers to the criteria of the award and explains why the author proposed should be awarded.
- A pre-jury will compile out of all proposals (longlist) a shortlist of 11 candidates for the final voting. The prejury also nominates a main jury of five German and international crime fiction authors. The main jury chooses five nominees from the shortlist. Each member of the main jury takes on the responsibility for one of the nominees. (Nominees and sponsorship will be determined until the middle of April 2008).
- The award winner will be chosen by public voting.
- The award will be presented towards the end of the festival Mord am Hellweg.
- In cases of doubt the final decision is made by the pre-jury respectively the organisation committee.
- Staff members of the project Mord am Hellweg are excluded from voting.

Mord am Hellweg – Tatort Ruhr is a project of the Kulturregion Hellweg (Cultural Region Hellweg) in the districts, cities and communities of Ahlen, Beckum, Bergkamen, Bönen, Dortmund, Fröndenberg, Hagen, Hamm, Holzwickede, Kamen, Lüdenscheid, Lünen, Menden, Möhnesee, Schwerte, Selm, Soest, Oelde, Unna, Unna (Kreis), Werl, Werne, Wickede (Ruhr) in co-operation with Hellweg Touristik e. V.
